In order to keep league as realistic as possible, we have decided to put in some trade rules for the league.
The trade rules (like most other league rules) are still not set in stone, until we have started the season - suggestions and comments from all GMs are welcome, the 5 member commish team will decide upon final trade rules.
Introduction/Preface
The following trade rules may be viewed by some as strict and unorthodox, but these specific rules and guidelines will ensure that the league stays healthy and realistic. I know many of you love to make huge blockbuster deals and numerous trades throughout the year to customize your teams. However, this is not a fantasy league and we need to maintain some realism to keep the league running for multiple seasons.
A trade is the literal removal of assets from your team in place of other assets in order to make the team better. It’s not something that real NHL GMs take lightly. The success of their team and their jobs depend on how well their decisions pan out. One of the major reasons so many other leagues unfortunately don’t work out (and why will have rules on trades) is because people get so excited about making trades that they forget their team needs, how close their team is to a cup and how these deals will impact their present and future. When this happens, some GMs decide to quit the league and at that point it is very hard to replace a GM with a team that is completely different than what it started as.
What does the league hope to accomplish with these rules?
- Prevent constant Blockbuster trades that result in random fantasy rosters on every team
- Ensure GMs make smarter and more realistic trades that address a team's needs, not just let them get their favorite players.
- That GMs are smart with their picks and prospects
- In the unfortunate event that a GM quits the league, the league has an easier time replacing the GM with a new member
Trade rules (pending confirmation upon start of league!):
1. NO CPU trading!
2. All GMs (=teams) can make a maximum of 5 trades per season (period running from pre-draft trade period (around 23rd of June) to end of SC playoffs).
3. Maximum assets (players + draft picks) per trade (both teams combined) is 8.
4. Maximum roster players (players with 82+ NHL games played both teams combined) per trade is 5.
5. A trade system is used to evaluate trades in a transparent way. This ensures no lopsided trades are executed. It ensures as well that GMs know which trades will be approved, and which trades will not be approved. Information on the trade system below.
6. Franchise Players will have Limited No-Trade Clauses. This means that these FP Players can only be traded to a list of 5, 10 or 20 teams. The list of teams the FP can be traded to is randomly generated in advance of season 1 (and for new FPs after their draft). The FP players (2-4 on each team at start league) will be selected by the League's commish team in advance of start season 1.
7. Each year, the best 3 players that were selected in first round of draft ('best' defined by a combination of: starting ovr and potential - independent of #pick the players were drafted!!) will be rewarded a 10 team Limited No-Trade Clause and hence become instantly an FP (even if a team already had 4 FPs!). League commissioners will assign the 3 FPs right after the draft.
8. A team can trade no more than 2 FPs per year. FPs can only be traded once per season.
9. Teams can only trade draft picks next two drafts during season 1-3 and next draft during season 4 and beyond.
10. Free Agency Bidding Cap - Each team may not offer more than their cap space per tick. For example, If you have 8mil in cap space and you offer one player 6mil, then you may only offer up to 2mil on all other offers combined during that tick. You may no longer, for example, make three 6mil offers to 3 different players with 8mil in cap space. Bidding past your cap on players has caused roster players to disappear from teams (see point 12).
11. Free Agent NTC Rule - Any free agent signings of players 80ovr and/or 3.5 stars (regardless of color) or more receive a No Trade Clause for 1 year, they may not be traded until the following Free Agency period begins.
12. Disappearing Players - Any team that loses a player in the offseason due to free agency bids will forfeit their rights to that player. The player will appear in the following years free agent group and will be treated as a free agent.
13. RFA/UFA contract offers max length:
- players aged 18-21y and 30+y (1st of July every year) can only be offered a max contract length of 5 years.
- players aged 22-29y (1st of July every year) have no max contract length cap.
14. Free Agency Bidding Restrictions
For any players that meet all of these conditions:
- player age between 24-33
- players 80 overall or higher
- players 4 stars or higher (any color)
The following bidding restrictions apply:
- offer can be no more than 150% of players asking price for the offered year amount.
- No Trade Clause for full year .
- Please take into account rule 13 as well on max contract length.
15 - New GM Trade Restriction - All new GMs must complete 3 full ticks (minimum) of games before they are allowed to make trades (the tick a GM joins does not count as one of the 3). The restriction may be extended longer if the GM is not keeping up with the league. The restriction may also be shortened for returning members we have worked with in the past.
--------
Trade approval system:
1. Trades to be negotiated on PM (no shoutbox negotiations).
2. If a trade is agreed upon between 2 GMs, the trade should be posted on the boards in the 'official trade' thread. Please make sure that all trade rules are respected.
3. The trade post should include: player name - player position - player ovr - player age - player star rating - player contract value - remaining years on contract (+eventual retained salary on player in trade). for draft picks, year and round. for each item, the 'trade points system' value should be included. At bottom of post, the total trade points for each team for the specific trade. (example below)
4. Both GMs should confirm trade in the official trade thread, with a short explanation on reasons for trade. Deadline for all trades is 12hours before planned advance. (ie if next advance is 7pm, post deadline is 7am)
5. League commissioners will check trade to make sure that no trade rules are infringed.
6. If trade is ok, a league commissioner will post a 'trade approval' in the thread.
7. GMs send trade in game.
8. League commissioner will approve trade in-game before next advance.
TRADE SYSTEM:
- Can use max 8 assets in trade
- A transparent 'points system' applies to make sure only balanced trades are executed and approved.
- The points system will have a 12.5% tolerance bandwith (i.e. if Party 1 offers 1000 points worth of assets, Party 2 must offer at least 875 points worth of assets) to address issues such as different team needs, player preferences, etc.
- In the case of teams meeting or exceeding approx 12.5% tolerance bandwith, both parties will need to explain in the official trade thread why they would like to do the trade. The Commish team will approve the trade if explanations
Draft Picks, Prospects and Retained Cap:
- Prospects (under the age of 25) will be valued on the greater of their OVR and their POT values.
- After the first 3 seasons, the rules regarding draft picks, prospects and retained cap will change. [further information will follow]
- Teams can only trade draft picks next two drafts during season 1-3 and next draft during season 4 and beyond.
- Prospects (under the age of 25) will be valued based solely on their OVR after the first 3 playing seasons.
- Retained cap will only have 25% of point value after the first 3 playing seasons.
Veterans (Aged 35+):
- Veterans aged 35+ will be valued based on the lesser of the OVR value and the POT value (use the Red stars value for veterans).
- After the first 3 playing seasons, Veterans will be valued based solely on the OVR value.
